They have no choice but to accept our pollution as part of their daily life. 88888.0184.0000ledgers (account books)Chincoteague Customshouse ledger1865-1888Chincoteague Island, VAThe Chincoteague Customshouse (VA) was in the Cherrystone customs district (ledger, p. 26, section 1). The customshouse existed from as early as 1865 when John Caulk was the collector, until at least 1888 when army engineer D. C. Hudson noted in a report that “at the custom-house on Chincoteague Island I learned that more than one hundred vessels at one time had been known to take refuge in Assateague anchorage . . .” No mention of its existence could be found after that date. The collector of customs by 1865 was John Caulk (1819-1891), born in Delaware and at one time a private assistant to Delaware Senator J. M. Clayton. At some point the customs office was in Caulk’s home. Caulk was still collector in 1870 according to the federal census of that year, but not in 1880 when that year’s census listed his occupation as “teacher”. It is likely that Caulk was responsible for the entries in the ledger, but when he left the collector’s job is unknown. At the time the collector’s jobs were political appointments; 1872 was a presidential election year and Caulk may have been replaced.CBMM catalog imageView
